ONA vol.12: Olga Amelchenko Quartet

Olga Amelchenko – Alto saxophone / Composition
Igor Osypov – Guitar
Igor Spallati – Double Bass
Jesus Vega – Drums

Created in November 2015, the Olga Amelchenko Quartet is an international band which brings together active young musicians from the Berlin jazz scene. Crossing barriers and frontiers, they establish a vivid communication through music, and strive for a multicultural form of expression. The bands opens up a field of experimentation, through which the compositions of the young saxophonist blend her modern jazz influences with Folk and Rock.

Photo: Nallelie Vega

ONA is a Slavic word which translates as SHE. ONA is Mirna Bogdanovic from Slovenia and Olga Amelchenko from Russia, two Berlin-based musicians who met at the Jazz Institut and have been friends ever since. Both active in the Berlin jazz scene, a mutual inspiration led to the idea of sharing a monthly series at their favourite club in Berlin, Donau115. Every month one of them will perform with some of their favourite musicians, either with existing bands or brand new projects – and you never know, they might even play together sometimes.

Moment’s concept

Caesar / Caesar / Theodor (Album Release)

Album Release Konzert!

Thomas Hähnlein – sax
Christian Müller – bass
Clemens Lotz – drums

Puls, Energie, Freiheit. So funktionieren Prozesse -stetiger Wandel, Stillstand vermeiden.

Mark Pringle – Piano / synth / comp.

EN:
This new constellation brings together empathetic musical minds to explore compositions by Mark Pringle. The trio navigate structures of varying density, jumping into improvisations characterised by at times delicate expressivity, othertimes bold intensity, always reactive, spontaneous and emotive. Mark’s compositions channel influences from the outer edges of contemporary classical and electronic music, as well as from his peers on the Berlin jazz and improvised music scene. The totality leads to a dynamic soundworld, urgent and colourful, brought to life by three strong creative voices.

DE:

Bitter Blond

Bitter Blond is back at Donau115! Forget the cold, come warm up to the sounds of Brazil, of the 20s (the old ones), the 30s, of Pauline’s voice and Paul’s gently weeping guitar.

Bitter Blond is a young band with an old soul, featuring Pauline Peek on vocals, Paul Santner on guitar, Sidney Werner on bass and Aidan Lowe on drums. They perform a selection of music ranging from nearly-forgotten jazz standards to traditional Brazilian sambas, but every song is chosen because it tells a story that has stood the test of time. It’s music that inspires melancholy and joy at the same time, the way that only old songs can. The playfulness and energy they bring to the music will captivate any listener and, at times, will make it hard to sit still.

Julius Gawlik – Tenor-Saxofon/Klarinette
Ole Sinell – Bariton-Saxofon/Bassklarinette
Sidney Werner – Kontrabass

One Final Boss + Pals

We’re playing a gig in Donau 115 to kick off the new year and a new musical project.

The legendary Clifton Cowboy has moseyed on over all the way from Bristol with his pal Ozzy Algar to provide support.

Here’s all the bio and whatnot you cats need:

—————————-

One Final Boss is a music project born out of watching old friends grow up and settle down and not having any ability to do the same. An indie music project based in Berlin, it is, rather appropriately, a mish-mash of folk and pop-punk. Influences are can be heard from an array of vastly contrasting acts such as The Mountain Goats, The National and Silver Jews. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, always self-deprecating.

———————————-

Ozzy Algar

https://www.instagram.com/ozzyalgar/

Clown, Poet, Performance Artist, Puppeteer, Musician, you name it, Ozzy can do it. Gather round as I bring you tales of the Megabus and more. From Happy Hardcore Haircuts, to exorcisms of dead online avatars, expect to get involved with clowning like you have never seen it before.

“A shapeshifting, kaleidoscopic talent”

——————————-

Lieutenant Jack Wilde plays his hits!

Famed Texan country singer and part-time cowboy LJW is stopping over in Berlin on his tour of one dates across Europe.

Known for his platinum selling singles “Life’s a Rodeo” and “C’mon Cowboy”, The Clifton Cowboy (as he’s otherwise known) has brought absurdist country folk to the mainstream in the UK and now has his sights set on the rest of the world.

Hold your horses, cos you’re in for one hell of a ride!

BernsteinZimmer // Laure Boer // Gałgał

Laure Boer, BernsteinZimmer and GAŁGAŁ will meet at Donau115 to perform and improvise with soundscapes, modular-synthesizer and Piano.

Design by BANK / Graphic Design Today

Laure Boer

Laure Boer is a multi-instrumentalist and singer based in Berlin. Her music is inspired by electronic and traditional folk music. Her performances are hypnotic improvisations around traditional instruments, odd percussions and sometimes French texts; a vibrant universe that is both vulnerable and brutal.
In last fall 2019 she did a 2 month residency in Manila, Philippines, organized by CTM Festival, Goethe-Institut, Nusasonic and Musicboard Berlin. She performed at the WSK Festival in Manila. Currently she is resident at Amplify Berlin, ACUD.

BernsteinZimmer

Despite or because of the bandwidth and creativity of the Berlin music scene, the feeling of stagnation and the realization that I need new impulses for my musical development arose at the end of last year. Searching for myself and my own musical inspirations, I locked myself in at home and tackled my first solo project, Bernstein Zimmer. Every day in December last year, a composition was created that I published in an online “advent calendar”.
During Summer 2019, he did a 3 month USA trip to do field recordings, sessions and improvs on the road. This music will be released in summer 2020.
1st of December 2019, his first EP: WIND, was released on all streaming platforms.

The first Stille Kammer of 2020, and the lineup is a stunner…

LIN SIEDLER/MARCEL SIEGEL DUO
Lixue Lin-Siedler – Lin 凛- trained in both the Chinese Guzheng and the Japanese Koto. With a body of work spanning theatre music, traditional East Asian music, jazz and experimental improvisation, she brings a range of diverse influence to her instrument. With her collaborator- composer and double-bassist Marcel Siegel- they will be presenting their new single, two highly original musicians offering a fascinating sonic contrast.

MATCHING OUTFITS showcase the beguiling lyrical and compositional style of Swedish singer-songwriter Linnea Mårtensson – full of textural surprises, dry witticisms and wistful balladry, backed up by the sun-streaked harmonies of bandmates Rachel Glassberg and Leah Corper. Catchy and captivating in equal measure.

Glasgow-based producer and songwriter MICHAEL BLEACH makes a rare live appearance in Berlin by special invitation. Known for his songwriting collaborations with Lord Magpie and Kate and Nina Scott, and his producer credits with Ben Osborn, his own compositions are a wildly eclectic electronic palette grounded by yearning poetic lyrics and irresistible melodies.

Practically Married #23: New Year, Old Love

James Banner – Double Bass
Declan Forde – Piano

We are back, in duo! After months and months of special guests, we realised that no-one else really matters except us. So let’s celebrate the original twosome once more, at Donau115!

James and Declan have been ‘Practically Married’ since April 2015, a name proudly awarded to them due to their ability to spend time together almost every day with only minor frustrations, and the fact that they play almost every concert together.

Since 2015 they have collaborated with Vilde&Inga, Tobias Delius, John Hollenbeck, Max Andrzejewski, João Lopes Pereira, Eric Vaughn and many more, and have become a regular fixture on the Berlin swing dance scene, performing with Ugo Alunni and The Good Old Good Ones. They also perform as part of other acts including the award-winning Rachel Sermanni and James Banner’s USINE, and have performed sold out shows at Spiegesaal and Konzerthaus Berlin (with Fabiana Striffler and Mirna Bogdanovic) and Leeds Jazz Festival in 2018. Upcoming releases are planned for 2019 with Jordan Dinsdale & Will Howard (UK), as well as Toby Delius & Max Andrzejewski playing the music of Herbie Nichols.
