SK#5: Carolina Lee, Penelope Gkika and Samin Son, Mi Ho

Carolina Lee

Carolina Lee’s lo-fi melodic folk-pop has hints of Karen Dalton and Syd Barrett, their harmonic structures and spacious arrangements leaning at times toward the psychedelic as they shift from dream to clarity and back again.

https://www.facebook.com/CarolinaLeeBand/

Penelope Gkika and Samin Son

Greek violinist Penelope Gkika applies her highly accomplished classical experience to a wide range of genres and aesthetic approaches, including traditional Turkish and Arabic music as well as contemporary compositions and free improvisation. Here we present her in duet with Korean multimedia artist and electroacoustic musician Samin Son.

Mi Ho

Born in Japan, Mi Ho’s current interest is peeling off layers of world one by one. A multi-instrumentalist and composer who brings a delicate, minimal and intimate approach to her performances.

LARIZA

Bernsten.Zimmer and Laure Boer are going to meet for the first time to perform at the lovey Donau115.
They will play improvisations and songs.

Laure Boer – percussion, loops, voice, fx
Bernstein Zimmer – Drumcomputer, Prophet08, Piano

Despite or because of the bandwidth and creativity of the Berlin music scene, the feeling of stagnation and the realization that I need new impulses for my musical development arose at the end of last year. Searching for myself and my own musical inspirations, I locked myself in at home and tackled my first solo project, Bernstein Zimmer. Every day in December last year, a composition was created that I published in an online “advent calendar”. Bernstein Zimmer turned out to be a (lifeblood) project.

Laure Boer is a multi-instrumentalist and singer based in Berlin. Her music is inspired by electronic and traditional folk music.
Her performances are hypnotic improvisations around traditional instruments, odd percussions and sometimes French texts; a vibrant universe that is both vulnerable and brutal.

Amusana

Just Another Foundry

Just Another Foundry’s Musik hinausgeht.

Florian Herzog – Kontrabass
Anthony Greminger – Schlagzeug

DIESE WOCHE 1. – 4. Mai

—> HEUTE! <— WE ARE OPEN!

Mittwoch, 1. Mai
ONA Vol. 4

ONA is a Slavic word which translates as SHE. ONA is Mirna Bogdanovic from Slovenia and Olga Amelchenko from Russia, two Berlin-based musicians who met at the Jazz Institut and have been friends ever since. Both active in the Berlin jazz scene, a mutual inspiration led to the idea of sharing a monthly series at their favourite club in Berlin, Donau115. Every month one of them will perform with some of their favourite musicians, either with existing bands or brand new projects – and you never know, they might even play together sometimes.

MIRNA:
Mirna Bogdanović is a Slovenian jazz singer-songwriter based in Berlin. She has graduated from the Jazz Institute Berlin in the class of Judy Niemack, Greg Cohenand Kurt Rosenwinkel. In 2015 she has won the Downbeat Student award for “outstanding performance”. She has taken private lessons from many renowned jazz musicians across the globe, was a member of the German National Jazz Orchestra (BuJazzO) and is an active member of the Berlin jazz scene. This year she is recording her debut album with the support of Elsa Neumann scholarship (NaFög).

Stax

Matthew Halpin – Sax
Bertram Burkert – Gitarre
Reza Askari – Bass
Max Stadtfeld – drums, comp

Johannes Metzger Quartett

Marc Doffey – Saxophon
Morten Duun Aarup – Gitarre
Fabian Timm – Bass
Johannes Metzger – Drums, Komposition

Roland Satterwhite Solo

Roland Satterwhite is an American Violinist/Violist and Singer.
He performs his original songs solo with the help of pedals and the occasional sparing use of a loop machine. His songs are largely inspired by Delta Blues and west African Kora and Griot music traditions but have the authenticity of an artist who has found his own voice. Roland has developed his own way of plucking the viola that is unique, and has lyrics covering subjects from political upheaval to love to animals. He also performs his original material with his trio, Tolyqyn.

As a violinist, Roland has toured internationally and collaborated with musicians as diverse as Albita, Pedrito Martinez, Ariacne Trujillo (USA), Pupy y los que Son Son (Cuba), Marta Gomez, Agujetas Chico, Jorge Pardo (Spain), Marta Topferova (Czechia) Django Lassi (Germany) Fanfara Kalashnikov (Germany/Romania).

Aside from composing and performing, Roland is an arranger, producer, teacher, recording engineer, and makes music videos.

Fini Bearman

Fini Bearman – voice, guitar, piano and loop station
Ben Barritt – guitar, voice

London-based Singer/songwriter Fini

Once upon a time Berlin dweller, now London-based, singer/songwriter Fini Bearman brings an acoustic collection of intimate songs to Donau, together with Berlin-based guitarist and singer/songwriter Ben Barritt. Sometimes dealing with settings of poetry or pre-existing texts, and other times with original lyrics or open, wordless evocations, this music is honest yet witty, mixing lush harmony and orchestration with contemporary grooves. These songs blur the lines between songwriting and jazz, melding influences from contemporary crossover artists such as Esperanza Spalding and Becca Stevens to the songwriting canon of the 1970s: Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and David Bowie.

Fini’s third studio album ‘Burn the Boat’ was released in Autumn 2016 and received rave reviews from both the UK and European Jazz press, including; ‘…A stunning album..A thing of unsurpassed beauty. One of the most memorable collections of self-penned songs you’ll hear this year’ **** ‘recommended’/album of 2016/ (Jazzwise), ‘Exquisitely sung…Top compositional form’(Allaboutjazz.com). The album has had extensive radio play on BBC 2, 3, BBC London, BBC Cambridge, Kent, Resonance FM and BR Klassik.
